Business is behaviour: How employee engagement can lead to business success

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

The pandemic year that was 2020 came with its fair share of challenges, especially for businesses all around the world. While a good number were able to succeed in the less than favourable conditions, many others struggled. What this revealed is the need for dynamic leadership in the global business environment.

Business is behavior

In the value chain for any business, each employee needs to be pulling their weight for the business to succeed. Simply put, the success or failure of a business is determined by the performance of all of its employees. Success in itself is “good” performance and failure is “bad” performance.

But what is performance?

What is performance?

Performance can be defined as the combined result of a series of behaviours by employees in an organisation. Successful behaviour is only possible when most of your employees have their hands on the rope and are pulling in the same direction This means that employee engagement is key.

What is employee engagement?

Employee engagement can be described as the emotional commitment and investment of your employees in their roles and the organisation as a whole. It’s how enthusiastic and motivated they are in performing their duties and contributing to the success of the organisation.

Employee engagement isn’t employee happiness or employee satisfaction. Employees might be happy at the workplace, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re productively working hard on behalf of their organisation. While it’s important to keep your employees happy, it’s equally as important to keep them engaged. Employee satisfaction is frankly not enough.

What is a leader’s role in employee engagement?

According to Gallup, only 15% of the global workforce is engaged. This presents both a leadership challenge and an opportunity for many businesses. Those in leadership roles that can master employee engagement have a better chance of helping your business achieve its goals.

Leaders boost engagement by developing a powerful vision for the organisation. They’re responsible for hiring managers who are equally as emotionally invested in the organisation, its mission and its vision. They also give them the required resources to build the best teams with the right people performing the right jobs. Their work is to empower the whole workplace.
