Create the right culture

Updated: Apr 6, 2022

Did you know that the revised ISO Standards insist that a good management system first develops an understanding of the internal context of the organisation by considering, among other issues, the culture of the organisation? Why? Culture is the single most powerful tool for leading change. Leaders who understand how to diagnose their existing culture - identifying strengths and weaknesses - are better poised to align culture with the transformational vision. Managing culture is more important than ever.

Leveraging cultural strengths while mitigating the weaknesses is the foundation for positioning a business for lasting change.

Right Culture

We began the year by promising that 2020 will see us at IMS Africa Ltd walk together with leaders in organisations and their teams to help them do RIGHT THINGS RIGHT. Simply put, this involves helping leaders to set the direction, build an inspiring vision and create something new.

Setting the right Culture: The Chief Enabler

So how do leaders inspire change in the twenty-first century?

Leadership culture is the self-reinforcing web of beliefs, practices, patterns, and behaviours. It's the way things are done — the way people interact, make decisions and influence others. Leaders' own conscious and unconscious beliefs drive decisions and behaviours, and repeated behaviours become leadership practices. Can you, therefore, imagine the cost of a dysfunctional leadership culture?

How about 29 billion dollars? According to a February 5th 2018 article by E. Glazer in the Wall Street Journal, the US Federal reserve penalised Wells Fargo & Co. for regulatory purgatory. This saw its market value plummet by twenty-nine billion dollars and dashed the dream of expanding its banking business. Independent internal investigations revealed that 2 million accounts had been opened without authorisation and the root cause – fraudulent culture of the division in charge!
